Coconut Oil: Not Your One-Size-Fits-All Holy Grail

You’ve seen it everywhere. Auntie's swear by it, your friend’s cousin uses it every day, and TikTok can’t stop dunking everything in it. Coconut oil — the “miracle” in a jar. But here’s the truth: just because it works for someone else’s hair doesn’t mean it’ll be your hair’s new best friend.

Hair science 101 — the hair you see on your head? Dead. Not “kinda tired” dead — fully no-longer-living tissue. Coconut oil can coat the hair shaft, help reduce protein loss in certain hair types, and give it that shiny, “I drink green smoothies” glow… but it can also clog your scalp pores, trap dirt, and make some hair brittle if overused. Why? Because your hair’s needs depend on:

  • The current health of your hair (damaged hair drinks up oil differently than healthy hair)
  • Your scalp health. (if your scalp is inflamed or if you are sensitive, it will feel unpleasant)

Think of it like this: if a doctor gave every patient the same medicine without checking their health history, they’d get struck off. Coconut oil might be the perfect “prescription” for one head of hair and a total disaster for another.

Bottom line: Coconut oil isn’t evil, but it’s not magic either. Let a trained professional who understands your hair’s current needs guide you before you start ladling it on.
